Indie Unplugged Miami 06/07

Indie Unplugged Miami was a show that was recorded on July 14th, 2007 at The Wallflower Gallery in downtown Miami. Some of the most popular indie artists from South Florida performed including Fitzroy, Raffa and Rainer, Rachel Goodrich, Rabbit in a Hat, Alucard, E. Grizzly, Michelangelo, Adolfo and many more. To hear some of the music click here. The artists made enough money July 14th to pay for all the expenses, to pay for the recordings, and also to print a promotional CD of the concert. It's basically local artists helping each other with supportive fans who paid to see it happen. Indie Unplugged Miami tentative release Date is October 19th, 2007, but it wil not be sold in stores. It will be a limited pressed CD and the only way you can get the album would be to contact Puerto Roc Records or the artists who perform in South Florida frequently.

HIP-HOP IS DEAD? 12/2006

People often ask us whether Nas and Puerto Roc were involved in each other’s work, since we have both released albums with the same title. We are not. E Grizzly’s album was released May 2006 and he won “Rap Artist of the Year” at the LA Music Awards in November of 2006 for his album “Hip Hop is Dead”. Nas released his album in December 2006. Puerto Roc sent Def Jam a notice of the situation soon after that release and did not hear back, so they hired an attorney to make some progress. Puerto Roc Records believed that owning the trademark for “Hip Hop is Dead” would give them some protection from having anyone else use it, so they filed their trademark application March 2006. The trademark was published January 2007 and received no opposition, so the trademark was registered April 2007 with number 3224910. After many months of waiting, Def Jam finally responded October 2007. Puerto Roc came to find out that the attorney (Mike Ries) they hired to initially file their trademark application, technically did not file it correctly. Unfortunately, they no longer had a strong case and their attorney told them it could cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars to pursue the case. “The situation is horrible” says Jonathan Padilla CEO of Puerto Roc Records. “We worked very hard on coming up with this concept and getting the music together and now we can’t even promote the album without having to answer a million questions and looking like we’re copycats. I guess you really do need to have big money behind your project to push it out to the mainstream, cuz at that point, no one else will want to do the same idea and you really will have a strong case if they do try to bite”. “Eventhough the Hip Hop is Dead situation was a setback, we will continue to move forward with E Grizzly’s first full length album ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’ tentatively scheduled for release Q4 2008”.

E GRIZZLY WINS RAP ARTIST OF THE YEAR 11/2006

E. The award show took place in Hollywood, CA, on November 9th, 2006. The winners were selected through blind judging which means the judges were asked to grade music without knowing who the artist was. "It's kind of hard to believe," says E. Grizzly whose real name is Erik Tirado. "I just love to make music. I didn't expect to get an award for it."E. Grizzly, who lives in Miami, FL, was also nominated for best breakthrough album of the year for his album Hip hop is dead! You can learn more about E. Grizzly at myspace or egrizzly.com

Puerto Roc Records Releases "Hip Hop is Dead" by E Grizzly May 01, 2006

Grizzly presents 8 tracks for your ear’s consideration, and really, they show no signs of death. E. Grizzly attacks tracks from all sides on HHID. He opens the disc with a shout out song, shouting out his friends who helped with the album, but makes it more personal and dedicates a few bars to each, luckily not taking a cue from another Fall ’06 release, Lupe Fiasco’s 10-minutes-too-long album closer. From there, his flow jumps around styles, dictated by the beat, which seems like a quality one would want from any MC, but not everyone always does it so well. On “Hit it Raw,” Griz (can I call ya Griz?) rides the cowbell and bass heavy beat like a champ. But he can switch it up too, and on “Happiness,” a beat based on the Beatles’ “Because,” (and expertly crafted by producing partner Jonathan Padilla) Grizzly gets serious about guns and violence, without sounding cliché.
Minus the unfortunate title, HHID is a solid sampling from E. Grizzly. The pairing of his verses and Padilla’s beats works great, obviously the result of good friends working together in the studio. Grizzly brings a lot of energy to what he’s doing, and is definitely worth a listen… That is, if you don’t think hip hop is dead.
